Description
The Beginner’s Blend is a specially formulated substrate developed by MycoMalta for novice mushroom cultivators. It is enriched to discourage the most common types of contaminants, making it ideal for those new to the process.
This mixture is packaged in a gusseted, 5-micron filtered bag, specifically designed for mushroom cultivation. The filtration system helps maintain sterility while allowing for proper gas exchange.
All ingredients are 100% natural and free from artificial chemicals, ensuring a clean and sustainable growing environment.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
>Prepare Yourself and Your Workspace:
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for your face, body, and feet. Choose a clean indoor area free from dust, drafts, and molds (including food molds such as cheese, cured meats, bread, wine, or beer). Disinfect the surrounding surfaces thoroughly, including the exterior of the filtered bag.
>Hydrate the Substrate:
Bring 3 litres of tap water to a rolling boil. Cut the sealed top of the bag as close to the seal as possible. Carefully pour the boiling water into the bag, 1 litre at a time, gently breaking up the coco block from the outside as it hydrates. Ensure there are no dry lumps remaining. Tie the bag closed and allow it to cool for 24 hours (no more than 48 hours).
>Inoculate with Spawn:
Once the spawn is ready, clean the outside of the spawn bag. Open the substrate bag and pour in the spawn. Mix the substrate and spawn thoroughly. Seal the bag and gently thump it to compact the contents lightly at the bottom.
>Colonization:
Place the sealed bag in a dark, cool location to allow the spawn to colonize the substrate.
CAUTION
If the spawn smells sour or foul, seal it in a plastic bag and dispose of it immediately.
If non-white molds appear on the hydrated block, do not open the bag—dispose of it sealed.
Children must be supervised by adults during all steps of this process.
